The latest excavation beneath Vorlaxion had uncovered more than anyone expected. What had once been buried beneath rubble was beginning to reveal itself as an elaborate and strangely preserved complex, its corridors opening into rooms filled with ancient Gallifreyan architecture, diplomatic chambers, forgotten records, and symbols that seemed to belong to a history no one could remember.
Lord President Chronotis led the group deeper into the newly excavated passageways alongside Professor Maltheus, Lord Darkfyre, Lady Roxy, Lady Rain, Lord Serpentine, Lord Conundrum, and Lord Winters. The excavators had already cleared nearly forty meters of corridor, and while the area had been checked for traps, the feeling remained that they were walking through something that had been waiting for them to arrive.
The first mystery was already waiting in the records of the missing constellation. Professor Maltheus revealed that someone appeared to have gone to extraordinary lengths to remove the constellation from every map he could find. It was absent from both physical and digital records, and even the oldest star charts aboard Lord Serpentine’s TARDIS contained no trace of it. Yet the surrounding stars proved that something had once been there. The possibility was disturbing. Perhaps the constellation had simply been deleted from the Matrix. Perhaps it had been destroyed. Or perhaps, Professor Maltheus suggested, it was simply gone.
As the group ventured farther into the newly opened corridors, the architecture began to tell its own story. Strange tree symbols appeared repeatedly across the doors and walls, eventually drawing the attention of Lord Darkfyre and Lady Roxy. The markings seemed deliberate, perhaps representing a house or organization known as the House of Seventrees, as suggested by the Castellan. Beyond them they discovered what appeared to be an embassy, complete with a diplomatic reception chamber, an ambassador’s office, elegant furniture, books, communication equipment, and enormous windows overlooking a strangely empty view.
Lord Serpentine investigated with his Sonic Screwdriver, but the alien seals scattered throughout the building produced no useful information. The technology simply did not recognize them. Professor Maltheus examined the symbols and found that some appeared to be partly Gallifreyan while the rest belonged to a language that was either unknown or had been completely purged from the Matrix.
Then Lady Rain discovered something unexpected.
Among the items in the ambassador’s office was a child’s drawing. It depicted strange buildings, saucers in the sky, and three unusual figures. The figures appeared to be the same beings that had been seen previously in the hologram. Lady Rain proudly showed the drawing to her parents, and Lady Roxy immediately recognized the importance of it. The discovery was innocent in appearance, almost charming, but it carried a darker implication. Children had been here. Whatever had happened to the people of this place had happened to families as well.
The evidence of erasure continued to mount.
A desk contained a blank nameplate and a peculiar communicator built using two different power architectures. Several drawers were locked. A letter began with the words “To my friends on Gallifrey,” but everything after that had somehow disappeared. A visitor registry contained Gallifreyan names, yet unlike ordinary gaps in a damaged record, these entries had clearly been removed. Professor Maltheus then discovered something particularly strange. The calendar in the room ended on tomorrow’s date. For a place believed to have been lost thousands of years ago, that was deeply unsettling.
The group began searching for answers in the records room, where countless ancient scrolls filled the shelves. Yet even here, absence was everywhere. Empty cabinets suggested that enormous portions of the archive had been deliberately removed. Some seals were damaged. Others were positioned at strange angles, their patterns apparently incomplete or intentionally altered.
Lord Winters, between his usual stream of observations and jokes, offered a theory that suddenly gave the strange building a much more frightening context. Perhaps this was a temporal remnant, a piece of a timeline that no longer existed. If the building had somehow been placed outside the normal flow of time, it might have survived while the history surrounding it was rewritten. The question became simple, but terrifying. If these people had been erased from history, how could anyone remember that they had ever existed?
Lord Serpentine suggested the obvious possibility. Perhaps Gallifrey had encountered another race possessing the same kind of temporal power and decided that there could only be one group of Time Lords. Professor Maltheus pushed back against the theory, pointing out that Gallifrey had known and even allied with other temporal powers throughout its history. There were too many possibilities and far too little evidence to know which one was true.
Then they found something that changed the investigation. The strange symbols on the walls were not simply decoration. They formed a mechanism.
Professor Maltheus realized that the seals on the reading desks were fixed in place while the corresponding seals on the walls could rotate. With instructions from the Professor, Lord Darkfyre and Lord Winters began carefully aligning the symbols. One by one, the pieces moved into position until the final seal was turned.
There was a click. A hidden compartment opened in the floor.
A document cabinet rose from beneath the room, containing ancient diplomatic papers. One document immediately drew everyone’s attention. It was a diplomatic agreement, but the most important name on it had been deliberately removed. The discovery only deepened the mystery.
Why erase the name while leaving the document intact? Why preserve evidence of an agreement with someone who supposedly never existed? And what threat had been serious enough to warrant such an act? Professor Maltheus examined the evidence and came to a disturbing conclusion. The beings represented in the artwork were not Gallifreyan and did not appear to be ordinary aliens. They may have belonged to another temporal civilization, one comparable to the Time Lords themselves.
Lord Winters proposed that the embassy might have been deliberately hidden before the timeline itself was changed. If someone had known that history was about to be rewritten, they could have placed the building outside the normal flow of time, preserving it as a kind of temporal time capsule.
That theory explained almost everything. It also raised even more questions.
Lord President Chronotis admitted that it appeared an entire race had simply vanished from the records of Gallifrey. Even Lord Serpentine’s extensive collection of old Gallifreyan texts contained no record of President Kaelor, whose name appeared within the recovered documents. Professor Maltheus could not remember him either, even after attempting to recall the name himself.
And that was perhaps the most frightening part. The Time Lords were supposed to remember.
When other races had been removed from history during the Time War, Gallifrey’s Time Lords still retained memories of them. Yet here, they remembered nothing. Not the people. Not the embassy. Not the president. Not the constellation. It was as though the universe itself had forgotten.
Lady Roxy began to wonder if that was precisely why the building had been left behind. Perhaps someone had anticipated the erasure and deliberately preserved fragments of evidence, knowing that someday someone might discover them. Maybe the records were not merely remnants. Maybe they were a message.
Lord Darkfyre agreed that further excavation might reveal more complete records. Lord President Chronotis confirmed that the excavation would continue, including efforts to open another locked section of the complex. Meanwhile, Professor Maltheus had already begun using his TARDIS to calculate the original position of the missing constellation based on the image discovered earlier.
Lord Winters offered one final possibility. Perhaps the oldest navigation records of TARDISes and other time vessels could contain traces of the missing civilization. Temporal inertia might have preserved fragments of information even after the timeline itself had changed, leaving behind a navigational anomaly pointing toward something that should no longer exist.
The Neverwas.
As the group left the chamber, they were no closer to knowing who had occupied the embassy, why they had been erased, or what role Gallifrey had played in their disappearance. But for the first time, they had something more important than a theory. They had evidence.
And somewhere beyond the stars, where the missing constellation should have been, there might still be an answer waiting for them. Or there might be nothing at all. As Professor Maltheus quietly continued his calculations, the possibility remained that they had not simply uncovered a forgotten building.
They had uncovered a piece of a history that the universe itself had been ordered to forget.
